                The truck pulled up to the edge of the gravel parking lot with its lights and siren off. The stars shone clearly in the sky overhead. The only terrestrial light coming from the tall windows of the looming lopsided structure at the far end of the lot. The diffuse light of a chandelier didn’t even cast shadows outside. The whole thing looked like it might fall over at any moment.                Officer Rights stepped out of the truck and slid back the hem of her suitcoat to put her hands in the pockets of her slacks.  Officer Rights walked into the break room. The smell of worn socks, day old coffee, and off-brand disinfectant welcomed her back to the stark white room. A periphery of worn leather couches surrounded the withered office chairs and scratched wooden table at the center of the room. The refrigerator was a metal box with a frosty black box atop it beside a free standing metal sink. The preposterously large wall-mounted television was still broken, with a dented file cabinet acting as a table for the old cathode-ray television playing the local news channel that still inexplicably broadcasted coverage of recent events despite the station burning
